Pretzel Bones

Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup warm water, reserved for dipping
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Coarse salt to sprinkle
Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, add 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon active dry yeast to 1 cup warm water. Allow yeast to become foamy.
  2. In a separate, larger bowl, measure out 2½ cups flour and ½ teaspoon salt. Then, pour in the yeast mixture. Using a dough hook, or your hands, mix until the dough is soft and no longer sticky. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  3. Place the dough in an lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Allow dough to rest for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat oven to 450°F and lightly grease two cookie sheets. In a medium bowl, add reserved ½ cup warm water and 1 tablespoon baking soda.
  5. Once the dough has doubled, cut it into 16 even pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece into a rope that is about 14 inches long. Fold the rope in half, twist together, and cut the loop at the end. Form both ends of the twisted ropes into bones.
  6. Dip pretzel bones into the baking soda water, and place the bones onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce: mustard, cheese sauce, ketchup. Eat within one day.
