National Nutrition Month!

March is National Nutrition Month! To celebrate, we’ll be sharing nutrition facts all month that will help your family make healthier decisions on a day-to-day basis.

Let’s start with the basics. What exactly is Nutrition?

Nutrition is the process of eating the right kind of food so you can grow properly and be healthy.

Sounds simple enough. But what exactly are the “right kinds of foods?” This will vary from person to person, but a great place to start is with the five food groups.

The five food groups are:

  1. Fruits
  2. Vegetables
  3. Grains
  4. Protein Foods
  5. Dairy

MyPlateMyPlate image, designed by Michelle Obama and the USDA, is the federal government’s food icon that’s designed to help people build a plate full of the five food groups at meal time.

For busy parents, getting these five food groups on a plate sounds much easier than it actually is most days, and it can get very complicated, too. You might not know the best way to cook vegetables to maintain their nutrition content or the best ways to vary your child’s protein source so they aren’t eating the same thing every night, and that’s ok. We’re here to help!

All month, we’ll have tips and tricks to keep in your nutrition handbook that will help your family make better choices and make those better choices exciting and fun to eat! Stay tuned!
