Food crafting with your kids creates family traditions, memories and festive decorations for the table. Apples are a favorite fruit among children and what better way to win them over than to dip them in caramel! As a parent, you can feel good about making these caramel apples with your kids. Crabapples are like miniature apples, so the amount of caramel and chocolate coating the fruit is a lot less than the large candy covered apples found in stores. Also, decorating the fruit with naturally colored sprinkles and chocolate covered sunflower seeds makes them a little healthier.
These little apples will add a touch of color to your table. You can add name tags and use them as table place cards or wrap them in kraft paper and twine, sending them home with your guests. Either way, both kids and adults will love them!
Assorted natural dye sprinkles and chocolate covered sunflower seeds
10 wooden sticks
Instructions
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray with cooking spray. Insert wooden sticks into apples. *Note, caramel will slide off of the apples if they still have the wax coating. To remove wax from the apples, dip them for a few seconds in boiling water with ¼ teaspoon vinegar.
Combine caramels and orange juice in a medium saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the caramels have melted, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly.
Dip the apples into the caramel until coated and set onto the greased parchment paper until firm, about 2 hours.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave on low heat, stir until smooth. Using a fork, drizzle the chocolate over the caramel apples. Decorate with sprinkles and sunflower seeds. Allow to harden at room temperature for about 3-4 hours.
